The Shadow of Your Memory: From Poem to Song

Those who suffer from a broken heart fear the night.  For in the shadows and silence, thoughts and memories grant no respite.  Sleeping without dreams feels like a slight relief. Something preferable to dreaming while awake.

THE SHADOW OF YOUR MEMORY

The shadow of your memory 

Drifts around my mind, 

I reach into the silence 

But there's nothing left to find.

I speak to empty spaces,

 Let my anger go, 

But echoes are the only 

Voice I’ll ever know.

Unseen claws scratch my throat, 

Tie my chest, steal my breath, 

And though you're gone, 

I can't let you go just yet.

Your face is just a whisper, 

A ghost in fading light, 

Yet I hold on to the pieces, 

Won’t let them slip tonight.

I speak to empty spaces, 

Let my sorrow show, 

But echoes are the only 

Truth I’ve ever known.

Unseen claws scratch my throat, 

Tie my chest, 

steal my breath,

 And though you're gone, 

I can't let you go just yet.

Every memory lingers, 

A shadow in the air, 

No matter how I chase it, 

It’s always waiting there.

The shadow of your memory 

Drifts around my mind, 

And though you're gone, 

You're never left behind.
